Space Planning

Accessible Toilet & Baby Changing

Unisex accessible toilets should be provided at all motorway service stations where public toilets are available. These facilities must be designed in line with accessibility standards to ensure they are suitable for a wide range of users.

Each unisex accessible toilet should have internal dimensions of 2200mm x 1700mm and include an outward-opening door with a minimum clear width of 900mm. Layout and fittings should comply with the guidance set out in Figure 40 of BS8300-2:2018.

To protect the availability of accessible WCs for those who need them, baby-changing provision should not be located within the same space. Instead, a dedicated accessible baby-changing room should be provided nearby.

Where possible, it is beneficial for the accessible baby-changing room to include a WC, ensuring the space can serve dual purposes without restricting access to those with specific needs.

These accessible baby-changing rooms should have internal dimensions of 2200mm x 2000mm and an outward-opening door with a clear width of at least 900mm, following the design principles in Figure 29 of BS6465-2:2017.
