Ambulant Cubicles

To support users with limited mobility who do not require a full accessible facility, designated ambulant cubicles should account for at least 10% of total cubicles, with a minimum of one provided in every facility. Where more than one ambulant cubicle is installed, a mix of left- and right-hand door configurations should be included to accommodate different user needs.

These cubicles must offer sufficient internal space, with a minimum width of 800mm and an activity clearance of at least 750mm between the WC pan and the internal face of the door. Doors should open outwards and provide a clear opening of no less than 700mm.

Designs for ambulant cubicles should follow current accessibility standards:

For cubicles between 800mm and 1000mm wide, refer to guidance in Figure 46 of BS8300-2:2018.

For cubicles wider than 1000mm, layout and grab rail placement should follow the guidance in Figure 39 of BS8300-2:2018.

The location of ambulant cubicles must take into account the impact of outward-opening doors on circulation space. These cubicles are often best positioned at the ends of cubicle runs, though they should still be easily accessible for users with reduced mobility, including proximity to the entrance or exit of the WC area.

If the toilet cistern does not provide a usable flat surface, a separate shelf should be installed at a height of 950mm above the floor to accommodate tasks such as colostomy bag changing. However, the inclusion of shelf surfaces must be carefully balanced with site-specific security considerations.

Toilet paper dispensers should be positioned where they are easy to reach but do not obstruct grab rails or user movement.
